天の高天原の神々は、イザナキ神とイザナミ神の男女二神に
天の沼矛(ぬほこ)を授けて、こう命じました。
「この漂っている国をつくり固めよ」
天の浮橋という空に浮かんだ橋に立った二神は
受け取った矛で渾沌とした地上を掻き混ぜました。
この時、矛から滴り落ちたものが積もって
淤能碁呂島(おのごろじま)となりました。
二神はこの島に降り立ち
夫婦の契りを結び、国生みの儀式を行いました。
その儀式で最初に誕生したのが淡路島です。

淡路島は瀬戸内海では最大の島で面積が約600km²、人口は約12万人と大きな島だ。1998年に開通した明石海峡大橋により現在は簡単に渡ることができるが、私が子供の頃の交通手段は船だけだった。
幼い私が家族に連れられて渡る島。実際の距離は約2kmと近い。しかし船で島に向かうという行為は、幼心には遠く別の世界に連れて行かれるようでとても恐ろしいと感じた。
日本最古の書物「古事記」ではイザナギとイザナミの神々のまぐわいにより大地が生まれた。
それが日本国となったとあり、その始まりの大地こそが淡路島とある。
幼い私が感じた異世界の淡路島、日本人として日本のルーツとされる淡路島。
その両方を大人になった私が表現したいと考えて、今日も淡路島に通い続けている。
Japan’s oldest book, the Kojiki, recounts the myth of the creation of heaven and earth. The gods of Takamagahara bestowed a heavenly spear upon the deities Izanaki and Izanami, commanding them: “Solidify this drifting land.” Stirring the sea with the spear, they caused droplets to fall, from which an island was born. That island, believed to be the first land to become part of Japan, is known today as Awaji Island.
In my childhood, Awaji could only be reached by boat. Though just two kilometers away, it felt frighteningly distant—like being lured into another world. The island where Japan is said to have begun, and the otherworldly sensation I felt as a child—guided by both, I continue to return to Awaji and turn my lens toward it.
